Typographic quotes

Done Typing & autocorrect

muleluku MOD ·

The single quote key produces typographic opening and closing quote ‘ ’ (unless the straight apostrophes setting is enabled).

It should do the same with double quotes to produce typographic opening and closing quotes “ ” (unless opted out via settings).

Bonus:

Use language specific quotes, e.g. „these“ for German. See also Summary table under https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark

But avoid the pitfall that even Apple doesn’t do correctly. The German closing sibgle quote ‘ is different from the apostrophe ’ and the native produces the former at when typed at the end of words even if there are no opening quotes somewhere earlier in the text and when the user actually needs an apostrophe.

@muleluku done in build 427, and it'll be in 2.1.3 on the App Store. The " key now inserts the quotes of the language you're typing in: “ ” in English, „ “ in German, « » in French, ” ” in Swedish and so on. Opening vs closing follows the text around it, including right after a swipe, so “Stop!” he said comes out right. There's a separate "Straight quotes" switch next to straight apostrophes, so you can keep straight ' and still get curly ". I left the single quote alone on purpose: after a letter it's always the apostrophe ’, in every language, so German text never gets ‘ where an apostrophe belongs. The German ‚ ‘ are on long-press of the ' key.

So the typographic ‘ ’ basically just always use the English ones. I think thats well enough of a compromise.

A tiny little thing: The settings explain the typographic apostrophe but shows the straight one twice.

@muleluku yep, the English and Slovak footer had a straight ' in both spots, the other 23 languages already showed ’ (don’t) correctly. Fixed for build 428, and it'll be in 2.1.3 on the App Store.
