New User Onboard & Default Settings for "iPhone" and "EFKey" Profiles

Done Typing & autocorrect

OverClocked TESTER ·

I uninstalled and reinstalled the app (TestFlight b460) to observe how it functions for a new user during initial use and how choosing the profiles “Like iPhone” and “EFKey” operates for them. My observations follow:

Like iPhone Profile During Onboarding:-

  • Keyboard was already selected under iOS settings > General > Keyboard. However full access was inactive. The initial setup prompted to activate full access.
  • I had English (US) and Malayalam Transliteration languages active before. The same two were automatically available upon reinstalling. I’m guessing the dictionaries were not removed during uninstalling?

    Typing Settings:-

Typing profile “Mine” was active instead of “Like iPhone”. However, all the Typing settings were “Like iPhone”. So it must be a minor bug.

    Keyboard Settings:-

    1. Mine” was active in Keyboard settings as well. The main settings were matching “Like iPhone” values, but I was also using the same values before. So not sure. (Bar to “suggestions only”, Next to space bar = “emoji”, Comma key - OFF, Period Key - OFF, Number Row - OFF, Emoji Row - OFF, Character Preview - ON)
    2. Keyboard > Gestures had the values I was using before. (Switch language by swiping the spacebar - ON, Swipe upon the Space Bar and Swipe Down on the Space Bar had “AI rewrite” with Action “last used” and “fix grammar” respectively. To match the “Like iPhone” settings, Swipe Up and Down on the Spacebar settings should be set to “nothing”.
    3. Keyboard > Long-Press Keys sub-setting had the default long press duration, Long press 123 - “default” , Customize Long Press had the default symbols and order, with Symbols in the Browser - OFF, and Domains Everywhere - OFF. Dictate by Holding the Spacebar - OFF, Move Cursor by Dragging Spacebar - ON, with horizontal and vertical sensitivity default values.
    4. Keyboard > More Settings: Web Address layout - ON, One Keyboard Size - Deactive, Emoji Panel - Recently Used, Large Emoji - OFF, Symbols on Letter Long Press - OFF, Hints in the Key Corner - NONE, More characters on long press OFF, Symbol Order - ON (iPhone order), Back to letters after a symbol - OFF, Back to letters after an apostrophe -ON, Currency Key- “Automatic ($)”, Allow one handed mode - OFF

    Style Settings:-

    1. Style Setting was set to Native before uninstalling. It is on Native after reinstalling. Light&Dark is “Auto”, Keyboard Height is 100%, Key press Animation is disabled, Swipe Trail is “comet”, Key haptics - ON, Key Sounds - OFF

    2. Style > More Settings: Native colours and font - ON, Native Return Key - ON, Letter Size - 100%, Wider Keys - OFF, Long Press Hints - “None”, Long Press Action Icons - ON, Language Code - “Only while typing”, Suggestion Framing - OFF, Key Shadow - OFF, Bold Text - “Like iOS”, Haptics for Gestures - ON, Haptics when deleting by swipe - ON, Haptics when moving cursor - ON, Customize Haptics had the value I was using before, along with presets. On a side note: “Haptics when deleting by swipe” should be greyed out when “Delete word by swiping on 🔙” is OFF.

      Tools Settings:-

  1. Under Tools, Clipboard history was ON like my previous settings. “Function Key Gestures” were ON as per my previous settings, Shortcuts had my previous settings, My info and calculator in the bar had my previous settings. Translation, AI edits, Dictation and API keys had my previous settings.
    EF Settings:
    1. Under EF, LAB, scrollable suggestions and period instead of space were active like my previous settings.

EFKey Profile During Onboarding :-

Typing settings:
“Mine” is active. The
only change is
After a Picked Suggestion too - ON

Keyboard Settings, Style Settings, Tool Settings and EF Settings are the same as when I selected “Like iPhone” during onboarding.

To Summarize:-

Languages dictionaries should be removed on uninstalling the app so that re-installation can start languages fresh from scratch. Users have the option to backup and restore/import learned words anyway.
For “Like iPhone” setup, considering all the iOS keyboard settings are ON, Emoji keyboard is ON, and iOS 27, the app settings should be as follows:

I think i used up the character limit in one post. So, Contd....

Period Instead of Space - ON (Stock keyboard has this auto correction that works if we select the text and tap on the tiny replace popup that appears)

For EFKey profile, the settings are at the discretion of the developer @efko . He'd choose whatever settings to be ON by default. Can any internal tester verify the recommended settings for "Like iPhone" profile (To Summarize part in the post) is correct.

@OverClocked the profile you picked during setup only applied part of its settings, so your old "Suggestions only" bar stayed and Setup showed Mine. Your old settings came back because EFKey keeps a copy of them on the phone even after the app is deleted. Fixed for build 462: the profile now sets everything it covers, and setup asks after a reinstall whether to restore your old settings or start fresh. Thank you so much for going through almost 90 settings one by one and writing down what each should be, I used it to decide the Like iPhone defaults line by line. Three of them are in now: native-like haptics, recent emoji and large emoji. The rest I kept on purpose. Like iPhone should look native, but the gestures, tools and other extras are the reason to use EFKey over the stock keyboard :)

@efko I @efko I removed and reinstalled the app (build 463). After selecting “Restore” during onboarding, no confirmation indicated success. The setup then offered only Like iPhone and EFKey profiles. I picked the iPhone profile, which appeared in Typing, Keyboard, and Style settings, yet “Mine” cannot be activated; it says “Mine is not saved yet.”

In short, Restore and Start Fresh functions similarly.

@OverClocked Restore did bring your settings back, but Mine was never part of the backup, and the profile screen right after it covered your restored keys. Fixed for build 464 and the next App Store update: after Restore, setup says your settings are back and has Mine already selected, Mine now survives a reinstall, and picking Like iPhone or EFKey keeps your previous setup in Mine.

OverClocked TESTER ·

@efko Uninstalled and reinstalled build 464, selected Restore during onboarding. “Mine” was available to choose. Did that, and found languages, and other settings intact except for “Several words in one stroke through the space bar” and “Words appear during the swipe” turned OFF. They were ON before I uninstalled.

@OverClocked those two were kept only on the phone and weren't in the backup that survives a reinstall, so Restore had nothing to bring back. A few other typing options had the same problem (deferred space and its sub-options, automatic apostrophes, tap to fix). Fixed for build 465 and in 2.2.1 on the App Store: they're all in the backup now. Your current backup was made without them, so turn them on once in 465 and the next reinstall keeps them.

@efko , also tried other combinations.

Restore —> like iPhone : Worked fine. Settings followed Lile iPhone values, theme was native.

Restore —> EFKey : Settings were mostly fine, but capitalization and spacing settings seem to have Mine custom settings as before. And Style > Theme was Native. It should be EFkey theme.

Start Fresh —> EFKey. Now, “Mine” is not available as it should be. Additional languages were removed too. But again Theme was set to Native, which should be EFKey theme.

@efko , uninstalled and reinstalled build 465.

Restore —> Mine works perfect now. All the settings and language is preserved.

OverClocked TESTER ·

As I was saying, Restore —> EFKey has the Capitalization and Spacing values as in the screenshots, which were my custom settings. The values you intend to set for EFKey profile is different right? Example: “Shift before a swipe changes” should be Next Word.

efko DEV ·

@OverClocked the spacing values in your screenshot are exactly what EFKey sets, so those are fine. The shift options under "Shift changes word case" weren't part of the profile, so your Previous word stayed. Fixed for build 466 and in 2.2.1 on the App Store: picking EFKey during setup now sets them too (Next word, and Only first letter on, ALL CAPS is a double tap on shift), and Mine keeps yours. The theme stays Native on purpose, EFKey only changes keys and typing.

@efko Restore > EFKey works as intended now on build 466.

For me, Keyboard > Symbols on letter long press was OFF and Style > More Settings > Long - Press Hints were None before uninstalling. So, symbol hints did not appear on keys. If this is the intended behavior by not re-setting them, all is good.
