Dedicated Apostrophe Key

Planned Languages / layout

user0964 ·

What would you like?

  • A toggle for an apostrophe key under Key setup. Like the comma, it can be swapped out
  • French apostrophe toggle under languages. When French is paired with a primary language, the special apostrophe disappears. It’s expected for one layout to take priority, but if no extra keys are enabled, this option should be available.

Why it would help

It keeps the base layout consistent for French QWERTY users and maintains the same number of keys on the middle row across certain languages.

@bruhdepartment the apostrophe key already exists for French, it's just off by default with QWERTY: Languages → French → Language extra keys. In a pair only the primary language's extra keys are drawn, which is why it disappeared, so in 2.2.1 the pair's page gets an "Extra keys" option where you can pick French and keep the ' on your English layout.

Point one is about providing an optional apostrophe key for any base layout (Italian and English, for example). Sorry for the confusion.

I reworked the UI of the languages screen. In the next App Store update you'll be able to pick which language you want the special characters from when you've got a pair set up. Hope that's what you're after :)

The idea is to have a toggleable apostrophe key under Keyboard → Key setup, just like the existing comma/period toggle. The reason for this is that some users will want to keep languages entirely separate (in the case of glide typing, where there is some interference). This toggle keeps the middle row spacing consistent across the English, Italian, and French layouts.

Right now you can put any character on the comma and period keys. We also have the "next to space bar" setting where you can pick emoji / language / none. What if we add the same option there, so you can put any character on it? Seems pretty reasonable, what do you think?

I'd like the plain apostrophe key on the middle row. This keeps the layouts for English, Italian, and French identical, while the suggestions/autofill for each language stay separate.

@bruhdepartment This turned out to be less simple than it looks. A key on the middle row affects pairs, layouts that already have an apostrophe, and row width on smaller phones, so I'm not doing it right now. Later I want to make the keys a lot more customizable, and that will cover your case too.

Completely understandable, and thank you so much. There’s no hurry.
