Optional: fix a swiped word letter by letter, or extend it before the space
Split out of #S365 (idea by @muleluku).
Today, after a swipe or picking a suggestion:
- backspace deletes the whole swiped word at once
- typing a letter right after it starts a new word, the space goes in first
Same as the stock iOS keyboard, and that stays the default. The idea is two optional settings for people who want more control:
- Backspace deletes letter by letter after a swipe. Lets you fix the end of a word, e.g. swipe "walked", backspace twice, get "walk".
- Letters right after a swipe extend the word. No space until you tap space yourself, e.g. swipe "house", type "s", get "houses".

@muleluku both settings are in for build 451 and 2.2.1 on the App Store, under Glide typing right below Insert space when the next word starts. One makes backspace after a swipe delete letter by letter (walked, backspace twice, walk), the other lets letters typed right after a swipe or a picked suggestion continue the word (house plus s gives houses). Both are off by default.
With the setting “Letters after a swipe continue the word" on, the sentences like below fail. I think keyboard should understand the context and split such erroneous inputs.
This is a test message is coming out as This isa test message
Do I need to worry? is coming out as Doi need to worry?
@ilikered with that setting on, every letter after a swipe went into the swiped word, so a tapped "a" or "I" got glued to it. Fixed for build 453 and 2.2.1 on the App Store: if the glued result isn't a word but the part you typed is, it splits right where the swipe ended ("is a test", "Do I need"), and houses still stays houses. One backspace right after brings back the glued form if you meant it.

Do I need to worry
Both the above works fine.
However, If we start any sentence with I then the next swipe doesn’t register.
For instance I wanted to swipe I was but then what I get is Iw.
@ilikered a swipe starting within about a third of a second after a tapped letter had to be far longer to count as a swipe, so a quick "was" right after "I" was read as a tap on w. It isn't tied to the continue-the-word setting, it happened with it off too. Fixed for build 454 and 2.2.1 on the App Store: short swipes right after a tapped letter go through now.
Although the issue with "I was" fixed, the original issue is back.
This is a test message goes in as This isa
Am I the only one seeing this goes as
Ami the only one seeing this
At this point, I suggest to move this to a typing only feature. Let’s remove this for swipe, it is making things overly complicated and swipe accuracy and overall output is going for a toss.
@muleluku FYI
@ilikered the English dictionary also has ISA and the name Ami, so "isa" and "Ami" counted as real words and the split never kicked in. Fixed for build 456 and 2.2.1 on the App Store: only a word that exists in lowercase stays glued, so you get "is a test" and "Am I the", and houses stays houses. I'm keeping the setting for swipe since that's what it was asked for, and it stays off unless you turn it on.
It was muleluku's request and he himself suggested that this be moved to typing only.
Anyway, latest testing results.
This is a test message comes out correct, but only after swiping test, before swiping test, isa are shown joined.
Same with am I the only one, only after swiping the, the words get split, before that they show as ami the.
@ilikered the split only happened when the word ended, so "isa" sat there until the next swipe. You and @muleluku were right about where this belongs, and my earlier reply had it wrong. Fixed for build 457 and 2.2.1 on the App Store: a letter after a swipe always starts a new word now ("is a" right away), and the switch, now called "Letters after a suggestion continue the word", only extends a picked suggestion (hou, pick house, add s, houses).
Works as described.
