Setting to turn off the automatic space after comma, ! and ?

Done Typing & autocorrect build 441

efko DEV ·

After a typed word, a comma, ! or ? always gets a space right away. There is no way to turn this off: the only switch is "Space after full stop", and it covers just the period. Turning autocorrect off doesn't stop it either.

Expected: a "Space after punctuation" switch in Typing → Spacing & punctuation. When it's off, "Hello?" stays as typed and I add the space myself. "Space after full stop" should sit under it as its sub-option.

@efko Turning OFF “Space after punctuation” only works in tap typing. A space is still inserter after ! ? and . during swipe typing by word or continuous swipe typing.

efko DEV ·

@OverClocked after a swiped word the keyboard already adds a space, and when you typed ? ! . or , it moved that space behind the punctuation instead of dropping it, so the switch never got a say. Fixed for build 443: with Space after punctuation off, that space is removed and the cursor stays right after the punctuation. A space you tap yourself still moves behind it like before.

@efko also, the “space after full stop“ under Spacing & Punctuation and “insert space when next word starts” under glide typing conflicts with or overrides the previous settings. We can atleast have a warning it the description of these settings

@efko Unfortunately, it’s same as before. Turning off space after full stop and punctuation only affects tap typing. While swipe typing there is always a space inserted after , ? ! or full stop. I believe “Insert space after the next word starts” setting under glide typing is overriding the former setting since it is always supposed to insert a space regardless of On/Off.

@OverClocked build 443 fixed the space after the swiped word, but when you swiped the next word right after ? ! . or , the keyboard added its own separator space in front of it and never checked the switch. "Insert space when the next word starts" had nothing to do with it. Fixed for build 444: with Space after punctuation off, "Hello?" followed by a swiped word gives "Hello?world" and you tap the space yourself, same as when tap typing.

Hmm. I think I have a different view on this.

My expectation is, while typing, if autocorrect is off, everything should stay as it is.

But while swiping I do expect spaces to be taken care off automatically.

This is also the behaviour of Gboard and native.

swiftkey is different and follows your 444 description.

@muleluku @OverClocked you two want opposite things, so build 444 has two switches. Space after punctuation in Spacing & punctuation is back to tap typing only. The space in front of a word you swipe right after , ! ? or . has its own switch under Swipe to type, "Space before a word after punctuation", on by default like Gboard. OverClocked, turn that one off and "Hello?" plus a swiped word stays "Hello?world".

@efko The new setting for Glide typing works as intended. However, it might be confusing for a lot of users and there is no way to grey out Tap based settings when Swipe based settings is on or vice versa, since it won’t make any sense. Wondering if there is any solution to solve the conflict. Atleast can we mention in the description for the two Space settings under “Spacing & Punctuation” that it applies to regular tap typing only.

muleluku MOD ·

I don't think there's neccesarily a conflict here.

Conceptually, personally I don't think it's too confusing, I think about one handling after a tapped char and the other before a swiped word, two different things in my mind.

Practically speaking:

  • With tap settings off it makes sense to have swipe setting on, if I want swipe to make my life easier.
  • I could want tap setting on and swipe setting off, if I find it odd that it swiping inserts a space, even if I intentionally place the cursor right behind a ? myself.
  • Having both on, full convenience.
  • Having both off, full control.

But I do agree, a hint that the first settings apply to tap typing can help.

@OverClocked @muleluku the two switches cover different spaces, the one after punctuation you tap and the one before a word you swipe, so I didn't grey either of them out and every combination works. Fixed for build 445: each description now says where the other switch is.

The description is already there for both of them. It looks clear to me.
