Arabic Tashkeel

Done Other Arabic fixed in 2.1.4

Yah TESTER ·

Hi! I have another suggestion regarding the Arabic keyboard.

It would be great to add easy access to Arabic diacritics (Tashkeel), such as:

َ Fatha
ِ Kasra
ُ Damma
ْ Sukun
ّ Shadda
ً Fathatan
ٍ Kasratan
ٌ Dammatan

Ideally, they could be accessed through a dedicated key or by long-pressing a suitable key, without taking too much space on the main Arabic keyboard layout.

It would also be great if Shadda could be combined naturally with other diacritics, for example: َّ ، ِّ ، ُّ

I think this would make the Arabic keyboard much more complete, especially for users who occasionally need proper Arabic diacritics.

@Yah the Arabic keyboard had no way to type harakat at all, not even on long-press. Added for build 431 (and 2.1.3 on the App Store): there's a tashkeel key right before backspace, a tap puts in fathatan and holding it shows all 12 marks including shadda and sukun. Type shadda and then fatha, kasra or damma and they stack on the same letter, and autocorrect leaves vocalized words exactly as you typed them.

I tested it, and it works perfectly! The implementation itself is great.

I only have one suggestion regarding the placement of the Tashkeel key. I don't think it should have a dedicated key next to Backspace, because during fast Arabic typing it's quite easy to hit it accidentally, which interrupts the typing flow.

Tashkeel is usually needed only for specific words or when clarification is necessary, so I think it would be better to keep it hidden rather than permanently occupying a key on the main layout.

My suggestion would be to put Tashkeel under the "." key as a long-press option. This would keep the main Arabic layout clean and fast, while still making all the diacritics easily accessible whenever needed.

Other than the placement, it's working really well. Thank you for adding it so quickly!

@Yah I copied the key position from the Android layout, which is why it ended up right next to backspace. Fixed for build 436 (2.1.4 on the App Store): the tashkeel key now sits in the bottom row between space and the period, where the native iOS Arabic keyboard has it, and the letter row is back to just letters and backspace. Persian and Urdu had no way to type these marks at all, so they now get the same key in the same spot (Urdu with its full set of 16), and Hebrew gets a niqqud key there too.
