Adaptive swipe like Swiftkey

Declined Swipe / glide typing English

What would you like?

We cannot consistently swipe to touch each letter all the time when swiping fast. However there is a pattern on how we reach certain letters each time. Swiftkey adapts the key orientation based on the correction applied by the user.

Why it would help

This will increasingly improve the swipe accuracy even if we are fat fingering the start letter or gliding short of a letter.

@kramanand I tested this internally before deciding. The idea was to learn where you tend to start a swipe relative to the first letter and where you stop short of the last one, then correct for that on the next swipes. It didn't help. In my test set 165 of 217 words came out right with and without the correction; it fixed 5 swipes and broke 5 others. The habits it learned were around a tenth of a key, while swipes of the same word scatter three or four times more than that from one day to the next, and the decoder already absorbs that.

I also looked closer at SwiftKey, and as far as I can tell it doesn't adapt swipe either. The learning you're describing is real, but it's for tapping: it learns where you actually hit each key when you tap and shifts the key targets. Swipes don't feed into it, and its swipe decoder keeps using the standard key positions.

So I'm not adding this for swipe. If there are specific words that keep coming out wrong when you swipe them fast, send me a few and I'll look at those directly.
