Add skin color to emoji
Please add the possibility to define skin color for emoji (long press?). Now, I can't add add a skin color when:
- customizing the emoji row in the menu
- Selecting an emoji in the emoji row when the keyboard is active
- When searching for a specific emoji

It's working in main emoji page, but doesn't elsewhere.
@Ed long press works in all three places now: the emoji row above the suggestions, the search results when you search from the bar, and the emoji row editor in the app (hold an emoji there and a small menu with the tones pops up). Picking a tone also sets it as your default everywhere, same as the main emoji page already did. Goes out in build 423.

@efko I can’t get this to work anywhere for some reason. Is there an option I need to enable.
Edit: ignore. Of course it only works with certain emoji 🤦♂️
Hahaha you need more coffee! Enjoy it’s in the attachment
Test ticket is complete we can close this one
I found these emojis didn't change color like the others that are similar to them.
You’re right, Muffin! I checked the native keyboard and you can indeed change skin color over there for those same emoji
Hmm. At some point before it didn't work that way. And I actually prefer it like before.
Personally, I like to use the hand emojis neutral in the default yellow. While some person emojis I like to personalize to represent myself.
And people might want to have person emojis of one gender in one skin tone for themselves and the opposite gender in another skin tone to represent their spouse.
I would argue for not applying the selection of one emoji to all other at all, not only because I prefer that, but also because native, Gboard and SwiftKey work the same way.
Or compromise: selecting a skin tone sets the default for all others. Which means, other emojis, for which an explicit choice has been made before, won't change.
Thoughts?
Interesting, setting a default skin tone. One setting, one parameter, applied everywhere. And you can change all of them, but once changed, it only changes for that emoji, only for that moment, you say, is that right? So how would that work for the emoji bar which has the options “order by most used” and “order by most recent”? @muleluku
Haven't worked out all the details^^
And I'm not sure about the emoji bar, haven't really played with it, since I don't use it. But I can imagine the emoji bar treating each emoji variant separately, so you can even have the light skinned you and your dark skinned friend in there?
@Ed couples and pairs get a tone per person now. Hold 🧑🤝🧑, 💏, 💑, 👫, 👭, 👬, 🤝 or any of the kiss / couple-with-heart emoji and a 5×5 grid pops up: rows are the first person, columns the second, yellow sits at the bottom. Slide to the one you want and let go. Works in the emoji page, the emoji row above the suggestions and the row editor in the app. The row on the 123 page only has the five matching tones, since that popup can't do a grid.
Also changed after muleluku's point: a tone now sticks to the emoji you picked it on, the rest stay as they were. Your first pick still sets the default for emoji you haven't touched yet. Goes out in build 428, and in 2.1.3 on the App Store.
The very first pick sets the default and there's no way to change that ever again?
Maybe make it a setting in the app?
Or go back to that each time a skin color is selected, it sets a the default anew. But the default only applies to emojis that have never been used before (or have never had a skin color been chosen before)?
@muleluku the default got stuck after the first pick, there was no way to move it. Changed it to your second idea: every tone you pick becomes the new default, yellow included. The default only applies to emoji you've never picked a tone for, anything you set yourself stays put. A couple in two different tones leaves the default alone, a couple in one tone sets it. So if you pick yellow on the hands, they stay yellow, and the next person emoji you haven't touched shows up in whatever tone you picked last. Build 430, and 2.1.3 on the App Store.
Tested it and and I believe it works as designed. Not sure if new users so who never worked with efkey before, get it intuitively though. But maybe they do. I don’t know. Just a setting in “keyboard-emoji” combined with a bit of an explanation would feel better to me in terms of how it works in terms of default skin tone. @muleluku what is your take on this?
@EFKey see attachment. Is the black hand just different in skin tone because of the black background, or are different colors used?
@Ed it's the same 🖖🏿 in both places, it just looks different on the app's dark background than on the light keyboard. Fixed for build 431, and in 2.1.3 on the App Store: Keyboard settings now have a Skin tone option under Emoji panel, with a line saying it applies to emoji you haven't picked a tone for yourself.
After a quick check, it seems to work fine for me as well.
I agree with Ed, I would also prefer choosing a skin tone from the panel to not change the default. I think the setting in the app is enough and once set in there, it should stay at that value.
But I concede that I am not too sure, what a majority or the average user would prefer.
Few things
@Ed @muleluku I switched it to how the native keyboard does it: holding an emoji and picking a tone now changes only that emoji, nothing else. The Skin tone setting is gone again since there's no default left to set, emoji you never picked a tone for just stay as they are. Fixed for build 432, and in 2.1.3 on the App Store.
Thanks @efko maybe that’s the beat thing to do then indeed. Sorry for all the hassle.
no problem ;)
Works as designed. Thanks!!
