Auto capitalize buggy
Steps to reproduce
- Auto capitalize not working on messenger, google notes, even while writing text now here
What I expected
That it should captilize first letter on initial keyboard popup. Or the very first typing attempt.
What happened instead
I had to manually press shift or enter the first letter then delete, to have the keyboard auto capitilize.
I think it would be better (in my case) to have the keyboard auto caps across all apps. Maybe bug has something to do with app recognition.

Do you have the "Capitalize first letter of the sentence" switch "on" under Settings?
I’m experiencing the same issue. Auto-capitalization doesn’t work in text editors either, such as Drafts and Kodeks. It’s not limited to the first word — it also fails after commas.
Additionally, capitalization behaves inconsistently when deleting a capital letter or selecting a word that starts with a capital letter, across all apps.
All relevant settings are enabled, so this doesn’t seem to be a settings issue. It may be related to how the keyboard handles cursor position, text selection, or context detection.
After a comma it is correct to not capitalize the next word, at least it is in English. Is it different for your language? Or is it a general rule for all or most languages using the Cyrillic script?
Can you post a video that explains the issue?
Of course, here it is.
Maybe it's specific too Cyrillic languages.
@jep_bautista what language are you typing in or experiencing the error with?
This happens regardless of the language. I can share a video showing the same issue with the English keyboard layout as well.
Regarding the punctuation, the video shows a period, not a comma. The first word after a period should start with a capital letter in English and other languages too.
There’s also another capitalization issue: when I switch back to a text editor from another app, if the cursor is positioned where the next letter should be uppercase, the keyboard switches to lowercase instead.
I would like to see a video showing this issue in English language. Having said that, 2 things I want to highlight.
I installed the standard Apple keyboard and noticed that it behaves the same way in Drafts and Kodeks as your keyboard does. So, it might be something specific to these apps. However, I haven’t experienced this issue with other keyboards I’ve used, namely Yandex and Remarkable.
I have tested with both typing and swiping in drafts app, and I’m not able to reproduce the issue. See attached video. First part shows the settings, followed by test with typing, then I have turned off the punctuation related settings for typing, followed by swiping the same message.
I found the cause. This keyboard behavior occurs only when the syntax mode is set to Markdown in Drafts. When I switch to any other syntax mode, the issue disappears.
Let's see if @jep_bautista has anything to add, as they describe having issues in messenger and Safari as well.
@jep_bautista when the keyboard opened, it checked for a capital only once, while the app was still reporting the previous text field, so the shift stayed off until your next keystroke, and typing a letter and deleting it forced a fresh check. Fixed in 2.2.1, the next App Store update: the shift lights up as soon as the keyboard opens at the start of a sentence. If Messenger or Safari still start lowercase after that update, tell me which language you type in.
