Activate multilingual keyboard (FR + EN) - french suggestions do not appear after a while

App Store Released Typing & autocorrect French Normal

sbk TESTER · iOS 27.0.1 · IPhone 16 pro max ·

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Activate multilingual keyboard for EN + FR

  2. Keyboard layout should be qwerty

  3. Start typing in English or French, especially in french like "ca", you'll see "ça" also suggested.

  4. Keep using this option for some time,am unable to identify for how long exactly, I feel that the engine gets confused or not sure what exactly. You won't see anymore French words suggestions..

  5. Hereby attaching keyboard screenshot for your reference.

  6. In the 3rd screenshot, you can see that with fr Lang, while typing ca it shows suggestion as expected.

Note: if you'll check for suggestions just after activating the multilingual, you'll not reproduce this issue, use it for sometime and then you'll find the suggestions will not be working.

Thanks! Is there a way you could attach your logs as well?

Unfortunately I turned off "Turn on diagnostic" option, but still exported both the files, unsure if you'll find what you need. I'll turn on all those options now for next time bugs.

Thanks!

@sbk with two languages on, the bar filled every slot with one language's words first, so French forms like Ça and C'est were queued behind the English ones and never made it into view. It got worse over time because the keyboard learns which language you type, and after a lot of English it started treating every new sentence as English. Fixed for build 446 (and 2.2 on the App Store): suggestions from both languages now compete for the bar, so "ca" shows Ça and "cest" puts C'est right next to the middle. Typing "cest" at the start of a sentence can still put Vest in the middle, I'm looking at that separately.

Okay, but did you do any changes in that mentioned build? Since you changed the status to "needs testing" wanted to make sure.

@sbk yes, the change is in build 446, which is already on TestFlight (447 has it too). After updating, "ca" should show Ça in the bar and "cest" should put C'est next to the middle, even after a long stretch of English. If the French suggestions disappear again after a while, send me a diagnostics export from that moment.

Okay sure, but I assume it's not just about "ça" and "c'est" alone? Any other french words with accents will start to show up? I'll try for other combinations also and keep you posted.

efko DEV ·

@sbk not just those two. The fix changed how the bar is filled for every word: French and English suggestions now compete for the same slots, so accented forms like déjà, très or été get in too. When an English word fits just as well as the French one, the English word can still win the spot, so if a French word you'd expect never shows up, tell me which one and what you typed.

As of now, I don't have this issue anymore and I could see the proper french words in suggestion.
