Smart correction is not that smart

App Store Released Typing & autocorrect English Normal

woqz · iOS 27 · iPhone 14 Pro Max · vLatest app store ·

Steps to reproduce

  1. Type in a phrase which would technically be correct but smart correction does not amend based on the proper context of the words being written

What I expected

Writing a test phrase that may be grammatically correct such as:

One would expect there to he more if them

This should be rephrased to the below (native keyboard does this):

One would expect there to be more of them

What happened instead

Remained grammatically correct but not contextually smart

@woqz right now autocorrect leaves a word alone when it's a real word, even if it makes no sense in the sentence, so "he" and "if" stay as typed. I'm working on a new engine for autocorrect, predictions and swipe that uses more of the sentence around each word, and your "there to he more if them" is one of the sentences I'm testing it on. It's a bigger change, so it won't be in the very next update.

Thanks!

@woqz the new engine now goes back and fixes the previous word once the next one shows it doesn't fit, so "there to he more" becomes "there to be more" as soon as you type "more". It only does that when your tap landed close to the other letter; a clean tap in the middle of "h" stays "he", and "if" to "of" needs a tap right next to the "o". The new engine is still in testing and comes to the App Store in a later update.

Type only? Or swipe aswell?

With swipe it already works like that with engine v2 - with typing it will now work like that too.

It only seems to work with a continuous swipe. It doesn’t work if you swipe the words individually

Individual swipes now get the same treatment: once the next word goes in, the previous one is re-checked, so "he" swiped a bit towards the b becomes "be" before "more". A "he" swiped cleanly through the h still stays "he", the stroke itself is stronger evidence than the next word. Should be in build 438.

Well that example worked. It wasn’t successful in helping it fixing sentences with the word to / too in them. I have just reset my dictionary though so will give it a bit of time.

Edit: just tried again and it got this sentence right first time “I went to the zoo just to see the lions. It was too far to walk though”. Definitely looking promising.

This is working for me using standard single word swipe. Amazing game changing feature. 👏👏
