When multiple forms of a word exist, the simplest, most basic form of the word rarely shows up as an option.

App Store Released Typing & autocorrect Normal fixed in 2.1.3

Kirby ·

Steps to reproduce

  1. Swipe a word like paint

What I expected

The word paint rarely shows up as an option.

What happened instead

  • The more complex forms of the word (paints, painted, painter) will usually show up but the base word paint doesn’t. You then have to add another space then delete it and the extra letters to get to the base word.

I’m not seeing this I’m afraid

If you are accurate with the swipe, this issue doesn’t occur. However, if your swipe trail is even slightly off, the results come out completely different. That way, currently efkey is more unforgiving. I have attached a video to describe this behavior, in the first few swipes of the video, I’ve been quite accurate with the swipe and later on I have intentionally swiped slightly off path in the middle of the word which produces entirely different results. We have other bugs like #B37 open for similar swipe issues.

@Kirby found it. when you lift your finger it keeps sliding a little in the direction of the last stroke, and for paint that slide goes right over r and e, the exact keys of the -er/-ed endings. the decoder was reading that tail as part of the swipe, so "paint" was never even generated as a candidate and the longer forms won. fixed for build 423: the decoder now ignores the fast lift-off tail and reads the release where your finger actually stopped. on my test set of base words swiped with that tail the base form went from missing entirely to always at least showing in the bar. if it still happens for you on 423, an export from Settings → Diagnostics right after a bad swipe would let me check your exact strokes

11/13 for paint. However, I see that paaint comes out a couple of times. Attaching the logs for you to verify the reason for this.

Tested paint repeatedly in build 423 - 15/15, the plain form was selected correctly every time. Looks fixed on my end.

I’m not sure if it is the fallback model. But I do see that paaint show up a couple of times.

This I think happens when you go to the very left edge of the letter a while swiping. Check out my video and you’ll understand.

ilikered MOD ·

@efko So the reason for Paaint is the slow swipe at a? Can you please confirm this?

efko DEV ·

@ilikered not the slow swipe. I went through all 13 strokes in your export: the two that came out paaint spent 50 and 33 ms around the a turn, same as the ones that gave paint, nowhere near the 600 ms hold a deliberate double letter needs.

paaint is in the telugu dictionary, it's the romanized spelling of the loanword with the long a, and in telugu it's more common than paint. both words trace the exact same shape, so with en and te on it came down to whose frequency won. my double letter rule, the one that lets you swipe too instead of to, treated paint/paaint like a to/too pair, and with telugu active the frequency alone put paaint first even when your stroke clearly read as paint.

fixed for build 425 and 2.1.3 on the App Store: when the doubled version only exists in the other language, it now needs a real loop or hold on that letter to win. replaying your 13 strokes gives paint 13/13 with telugu active and with english active, and a loop or hold on the a still gives paaint.

it got into learned words because every paaint you kept was counted like any other swiped word

ilikered MOD ·

Paaint is not a telugu word. It was actually in my learned words somehow. I don't know how.

Unmutual TESTER ·

Why is paaint even being suggested. Is it a word?

ilikered MOD ·

It’s present in the learned words somehow.

Unmutual TESTER ·

Can you not just delete it? Is trace will be indistinguishable from paint so likely to lead to some confusion although I accept that it should be ranked much lower to the point it shouldn’t really be suggested

ilikered MOD ·

I already did that. Like you correctly mentioned, the issue isn’t about deleting it from my learned words, we are trying to understand the behavior that causes this word to rank much higher.

The fix is working as expected. I could swipe paint consistently without paaint showing up.

And like I said, paaint isn’t a telugu word but somehow ended up in my learned words.
